Christmas Lights in New Orleans: How the Big Easy Does Christmas

Celebration in the Oaks

This light show in City Park not only features some of the best Christmas lights New Orleans has to offer, but has been voted one of the best in the whole country. Over 1 million lights set the trees in the park aglow along with animated holiday displays which have become favorites for Christmas in New Orleans.

This year’s event will feature a Driving Tour to allow anyone to enjoy the lights while practicing safe social distancing. Celebration in the Oaks is a must when it comes to Christmas lights in New Orleans, so don’t miss out!

Christmas in the Park

Just ten minutes away in Metairie, Lafreniere Park comes alive during the holidays with an amazing LED light display like no other! Not to be outdone by previous years, they’ve added even more lights and fun displays for all to enjoy in 2020. Over 10 million lights will be on display, making it one of the area’s biggest Christmas light events.

Lafreniere Park will be fully decorated with popular themes including Star Wars, Minions, Disney princesses, Marvel and D.C. Comics characters, a pirate ship, and more! And of course, Christmas characters like Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, and even the Grinch will be on-hand.

This will be an interactive drive-through event this year to help keep attendees safe and socially-distanced, but don’t let that fool you. There will still be incredible lights, music, and vendors to make your Christmas experience as familiar as ever.

  • When: Friday, December 3rd – Thursday, December 30th from 5:30 pm – 9 pm (10 pm Fri. – Sat.)

Waldorf Wonderland

One of the special New Orleans Christmas traditions since the 1930s, the lighting of the Waldorf Wonderland lobby at the Roosevelt Hotel is simply not to be missed. This year the display is promised to be even brighter than ever before. While the theme of the decorations is always a surprise, this Christmas tradition is historically free to the public and a sight to behold.

While the lighting ceremony was held privately this year to ensure safe social distancing, the lights are still on full display to the public. So stop by the Roosevelt this Christmas season to see what elegant designs they’ve come up with this year!

Luna Fête

The Crescent City is no stranger to great art, and Luna Fête has played host to some of the best light artists in the world, as well as New Orleans talented youth. This exhibit features colorful light displays decorating the massive 7.5 acre Convention Center Pedestrian Park. Light truly becomes art in the magical world of Luna Fête.

This year’s Luna Fête is taking things to a whole new level! Local light artists and scientists have collaborated to create displays that explore the beauty and wonders of the natural world and space itself.
