It’s the worst feeling when you walk into your kitchen and see water pooled all around your refrigerator. Not only is it a mess, but it can also be a sign of a bigger problem. If your refrigerator is leaking water, don’t panic! We’ve put together four repair tips that will help you get your fridge back in working order. Keep reading for more information on what to do when your refrigerator leaks water.

What To Do When Your Refrigerator Leaks Water

If your fridge is leaking you’ll want to get it fixed in a hurry. Let’s go over our top four tips for when your refrigerator is leaking water.

Tip 1: Check The Refrigerator Water Line

One of the most common causes of a refrigerator leak is a loose water line. Start by checking to make sure the line is properly connected to the water supply. If your refrigerator is leaking at the bottom below the kickplate, the water line is probably partially disconnected. If it’s disconnected or loose, simply tighten the connection and see if that solves the problem.

Tip 2: Leaking From Water Filter

Another common reason why your refrigerator leaks water is a loose water filter. If your fridge has a water filter, check to see if it’s properly tightened. If it’s not, simply tighten it and see if that solves the problem. And beware, you’re more likely to have this problem if you purchase a non-OEM aftermarket filter. Make sure to buy the OEM filters.

Tip 3: Check The Drain Pan

If you find your refrigerator leaking from the front, it’s likely the drain pan is full. The drain pan is located under the fridge and catches any water that drips from the defrost cycle. If it’s full, simply empty it and see if that solves the problem with your leaky refrigerator.

Tip 4: Check for Leaks in the Water Inlet Valve

If you notice your fridge leaking from the back, it’s likely the water inlet valve is leaking. The water inlet valve is located behind the fridge and supplies water to the ice maker and water dispenser. Check for cracks or holes to see if that’s the problem. If it’s leaking, you’ll need to replace it, which is likely a job for a professional.
