Modern appliances are equipped with technology that sometimes feels like they’re smarter than we are. So when Whirlpool refrigerator freezer error codes start popping up on the refrigerator display, it can be unnerving. What do these codes mean anyway?

Whirlpool refrigerator diagnostic codes are designed to alert you to a problem that needs to be addressed. Some Whirlpool refrigerator fault codes have an easy fix, such as changing the water filter. Other codes may indicate a more serious problem that requires professional service.

Troubleshooting Whirlpool
Refrigerator Freezer Error Codes

Our Whirlpool refrigerator troubleshooting guide explains some common Whirlpool refrigerator freezer error codes, what they mean, and what you can do about it.

Error Code C on Refrigerator Display

Whirlpool refrigerator freezer error codes that show C on the display indicate a refrigerator thermistor failure.

Problem: This code means that the refrigerator temperature sensor has failed. If the temperature sensor is not working, your refrigerator won’t maintain proper temperatures.

DIY Fix: Unplug the refrigerator. Check the thermistor wire harness to see if it is loose. If it is, reconnect it securely. If the harness is damaged, replace the harness. Otherwise, if the harness is fine, then the refrigerator compartment thermistor needs to be replaced. Plug the refrigerator back in.

Error Code CF on Refrigerator Display

When you see a Whirlpool fridge error code CF on the display, it means there is a communication failure between the main control board and the user interface control.

Problem: Needless to say, electrical systems need to “talk” to each other in order to function properly. When there is a communication failure, the user interface won’t work and it is possible that the refrigerator will stop working if the main control board is defective.

DIY Fix: Unplug the refrigerator. Check the wire harness connections for both the main control board and the user interface control. If either shows signs of damage they need to be replaced, but if they are simply loose go ahead and secure them. Determine if both sets of wire harness connections are OK.

The next step is to replace the user interface control. In the event that doesn’t solve the problem, the main control board also needs to be replaced. Reconnect the power to the refrigerator.

Error Code 18 on Refrigerator Display

Whirlpool refrigerator freezer error codes include one that monitors the internal temperature. A code 18 reading on the fridge display means that the internal temperature has risen above the set point.

Problem: Power failure is most often the cause of the over temperature condition. When the power to the refrigerator is suspended, the temperature gradually increases. If you are unaware that there is no power and are opening the doors, cold air escapes speeding up the spike in temperature.

DIY Fix: Unplug the refrigerator. Make sure the refrigerator is securely plugged into the wall. Once the freezer cools back to the right temperature, press the freezer temperature keypad to reset the freezer temperature display.
